This book closely mirrors aspects of my own life and career, so much so that I felt tempted to sue the author. However, I just have to admit that he has written my autobiography before I got around to it. While it lacks the stylistic niceties of Kieran Dell's "Insula" (which I can't place a product link to here), it aims for realism rather than Dell's fabulism, and it si a realism based in solid fact even though there are many references to the total fiction that appears on the Internet.The best aspect of it is that it is fixed very well in space and time, describing areas of Melbourne as they are today and making flashbacks to an earlier more gentle age in Melbourne, when hot summers weren't something we had to feel guilty about and kids weren't afraid to play football. It made me miss the places it's set in, where I use to haunt.
The reams of facts and factoids that are on eery page give it a sense of topicality, too, with items from the news of the time when it was published. This topicality might e its downfall as in a few years it will be seen as a snapshot of the time and place in which it was written. For this reason its important to uy it now while the things it talks about are fresh in your mind.
Now, why not five stars? Well, the fifth star is based on whether I'd reread it or not, and because of its fixed moment in time and space I doubt I will. But there are plotlines unfulfilled in this work and if the author eve comes out with a sequel I'll be snapping it up.

Intelligent, funny and thoughtful read. Under an irreverent torrent of jokes there is a gentle and considerate treatment of social anxiety and mental illness that affects many people. Best book I read in 2015
Excellent book, I read and I really recommend everybody!!!
Protagonist Rick is the antihero we all wish we weren't - painfully shy, he shields himself from the world by focusing on his all-consuming relationship with tin-foil-hat types on internet chat rooms. We've all had days like that. Luckily he has some delightfully funny co-workers who frog-march him onto an internet dating site in a couple of laugh-out-loud scenes.
