From the author of the acclaimed spiritual novel, The Oarsman, comes a new adventure.

A worker ant moves dirt and lifts leaves, day after day. Her sisters tease her for being small and an absent-minded dreamer, but she focuses on her tasks. One morning she sees a pink petal let loose on the winds, and thinks she hears it whisper a beckoning call.

When disaster strikes her colony, she has no choice but to set out into the deepest and most unknown parts of nature. Lost and scared, unsure where to turn, she decides to seek out that curiously fleeting petal. On her adventure she will find friends, enemies, the wonders of nature, and perhaps she might even stumble across the biggest mystery of them all.

The only thing certain is that her life will be changed forever.

I recently finished Zubin Mathai's "The Oarsman" and having liked it so much, I decided to read his second book, "The Ant That Found God."

The story is fairly simple, telling of a worker ant and a soldier ant who lost their colony to a poisoning. Along with a new princess ant, they left to find a new colony. This is a story of the challenges which they met along the way.

The complexity of the book is in the telling of the two ants with disabilities who must adapt to new environments and challenges along their journey. The worker ant has only one antenna, so trying to walk in a straight line is difficult, and she frequently finds herself walking in circles. The soldier ant has lost and eye in battle, and so can only use one eye to judge distances and the circumstances. She has become the worker ant's friend and protector, and the two of them, using the capabilities they have, manage to overcome some of the most difficult of tasks. The worker ant is determined to go to the east to find a new colony in which to live. She follows flower petals in this effort, and is certain they will lead them to the new and accepting colony. Along the way they are helped by various creatures, such as a beetle, a desert rat, a mountain lion, an owl, and a squirrel. The soldier ant had taken in some of the poison, so had to deal with its effects. However, his honor was at stake, and he kept it by protecting and guiding the worker ant. Their main enemy along the way was a wasp, with which the soldier ant encountered in battle. His bad eye was the result of such and encounter, and he fought the wasp mightily, but did not kill it. That same wasp, enraged, attempted to kill the soldier ant and the worker ant, so followed them and they had frequent encounters, eventually ending in the soldier ant's death. The worker ant, having been saved by her protector, continued her quest for a new colony. After many miles of meeting and overcoming the challenges, she comes to a lake, where the flower petals have led her. It is there that she suddenly realizes her great losses -- her friend had died protecting her. She had difficulty overcoming the tragic events in her small life, and went into a deep depression. She was found by an old man who lived in a nearby cabin. He fed her, and brought her back to health. He told her about his concept of God, and how all of nature was provided by her, and this was really like a home. He taught the worker ant to look around and absorb the beauty and ways of the natural world, and how these were there for protection and care. The old man wanted the worker ant to remain, but she told him she still needed to find her new colony, that that was her true home. He told her of a colony on the other side of the lake, and she continued her quest, meeting new challenges, including the wasp. Not wanting to reveal everything, I will mention that she did find the new colony and was accepted by the queen.
What I wish to tell you is that Mr. Mathai is a writer who uses symbolism as his form of expression. This symbolism is not apparent unless you realize it's there. I saw this simple story as a complex tale of endurance, stamina, courage, friendship, honor, and willingness to meet challenges when there is a goal that is strongly sought. It is also the story of a guiding force which makes things possible. I found that it was also the story of meeting challenges when one has disabilities, while both the disabilities and the challenges which are overcome make one stronger, and more able to survive adversity.
I highly recommend reading "The Ant that Found God." It certainly made me ponder many things. Thank you Mr. Mathai for enriching my world.

The Ant That Found God A Fable of SelfDiscovery edition by Zubin Mathai Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Ant that found God, by Zubin Mathai, is a beautiful piece of writing. It is a simple story about a worker ant who strikes out from the colony in search of something more. Driven by a compulsion to follow pink petals which appear and float off on the currents of winds, the ant finds herself engaging new friends, and enemies in this daring and courageous expedition to find out where these beautiful petals are heading. The parallels to the lives we lead as humans, are obvious, and the transcendent message that peace and happiness are to be found in the moment and not in possessions or wealth, leaves the reader feeling good. Moreover, as much as one might think that the story of an ant would be a child's book, The Ant that found God is far more relevant and applicable to the adult reader because it makes one reflect on life and what is important about it and what it is we are hoping to achieve in the pursuit of that flighty, often ethereal thing called happiness. The author does a brilliant job of taking us into a world as seen from the perspective of ants and beetles and wasps and spiders, and creating another dimension which we rarely ever think about and yet which is all around us. This is not a placid story. It is filled with thrills, adventures, danger, conflict and even death - on a level we never think about. I dare say, after having read this book, that I would not willingly ever step on an ant again. The Ant that found God is an inspiring story that touches the soul and reminds us that in spite of everything we think is important about life and the goals we strive to achieve, that the real joy of living exists within us already - from the day we are born to the day we die.
